Eilean-Òr ('Island Gold' in Gaelic) has been in the making for 2 years now.
We didn't want to go down the neo-punk brewers' route of chucking buckets and buckets of different hops into a brew and claim that it was special and revolutionary. Real brewers brew with more care and attention to detail than that.
In Scotland we have a tradition of producing great malty brews (the Scottish 80/- is an iconic beer style) so we have spent those 2 years using our experience and skills to craft a beer from our roots but which also reflects today's desire for something different.
To a weighty malt base we have added porridge oats to give us a beautiful golden ale. Keeping it simple, Challenger hops provide bitterness, which is smoothed by the oaty background. We have also sourced a fantastic rare hop which adds immensely to the beer's character, and we are keeping this very close to our chests.
So, Eilean-Òr is Skye's first craft keg beer: a delicious, refreshing golden beer with an initial light bitterness that dissolves through to a soft, fruity flavour, before moving into a delicate oaty finish. Genuinely different!
